The cardboard spool was tested for strength. How much wait can it withstand before the walls cave in? The volunteer standing on this spool weighs in at 85kilos/lb187.39. another volunteer that weighs 95kilos/lb209 also tested with their weight by leaning heavily on it without it getting crushed. That is the extent of the firmness and rigidity of the cardboard spool which is made of compressed cardboard paper.
As part of the experiment the spools have been shaved at both ends of the heel to see how balanced and aesthetic it will look by making a dummy and using the same material to make the toe. The dilemma that was being faced with was about how to fill up the toe so that it lends enough support to the wearer when it does become a shoe. I have Sawn it in half and shaved the bottom half that would be resting on the floor, used a modelling board to create the inner sole and stuck them together with an epoxy glue. The sole aim of this excercise was just to simulate and observe its behaviour as a shoe and then see how it can be modified by improving on its faults.
This research is what has led to the final design of the spool heel shoes which is now at the stage where the first prototype will now be made.
